In fact, I’ve made you quite a few. Generally a new one every month.
Music discovery can be quite lonely in the modern era. You listen to your favorites until an algorithm tells you what else you might like. You either listen to them or don’t, and the algorithm changes. That’s pretty much it. It’s not a conversation so much as it is targeted ads.
I’ve always preferred a more human approach. I love sharing music with friends and having them share music right back. I love walking into a record store and asking them what this record they’re playing is because I’ve never heard anything like it. I love trying to latch onto lyrics from a song on the radio or one the DJ is spinning that’s making everyone go crazy on the dance floor and Googling them the second I have the chance. I love reading thoughtful criticism from incredible music journalists and walking away with new sounds to explore.
Unlike the algorithm, they can tell me why the music moves them and why I absolutely need to hear it. And then I can keep the conversation going.
