A Very Special One For You
I hope y'all have been liking the mixes so far this year! I've really been loving making them, collaborating with some of my favorite people, and hearing thoughts from all of you out there on what tunes you're really digging.
This month, I did something a little different, and I hope you'll take the opportunity to check it out on Mixcloud. As always, the Spotify link is there for your ease of listening. Do I need to get Apple Music? Do people use/like that? Do I pay for Apple Music just so I can put these on there as well? Let me know, I guess!
I also did a huge buy of blank cassettes, so expect updates of physical copies of this mix and all the others soon. :)
And hey, if you like it, why not share the mix or this newsletter with a friend?
91.1 FM WRUW, 11/1/96
Created for a reminder of what we had.
Remember radio? I do. It feels like a lost medium to me, because who out there is still listening? Plenty of people, it seems, since it's still a profitable business model. Plenty of people who have cars, most likely.
November is when it really starts feeling like fall, and fall makes me think of the 90s. We can argue to death about what season each decade is, but the 90s are autumn. Sorry if you disagree (ie - sorry if you're wrong). Flannels and fleece and college rock from the era go hand in hand.
I miss when rock music was on the radio, and when I was cleaning out all my stuff from my parent's house last year, I miraculously found a tape I had recorded a college station's broadcast onto. It was labeled 91.1 FM WRUW, 11/1/96. WRUW is an ad-free station for Case Western Reserve University from back home in Cleveland.
I popped in the cassette and was transported back. This show was apparently hosted by 2 individuals who went by "The Batman" and "Robin's Egg the Bluesman." No other information available. It's amazing.
I digitized the cassette to mp3 for you all. Quality is what you'd expect, with a few dropped bits and tape decay with some inaudible radio banter, but it's a really interesting time capsule.
I hope you'll take the time to listen to it on the Mixcloud link above. As always, I put the songs in a playlist on Spotify for you, if you want to hear the full quality versions.
Love you all. Hope you enjoy!
Join Me: #coatparade
November means a few things: Thanksgiving, big meals, family. But most importantly, it means coats and a parade where I watch and livetweet coat commentary.
It's my favorite Thanksgiving tradition. This will be my 7th year doing it, which is very silly. As always, I like to say that people seem to like it, but people's moms seem to love it.
I'm done looking for a job, so I'm not on private anymore. So please join me on twitter @bradyocallahan on Thanksgiving morning, 9 AM, for some #coatparade.
RIYL: coats, parades, lip syncing stars of today and yesterday
Check out prior #coatparade coverage.
Some Other Clothes Things I Love
(that you might love too!)
Todd Snyder x L.L. Bean - One of my current favorite menswear designers partnered up with one of my all-time favorite American heritage brands for the second year in a row, and it's not a surprise that I adore every bit of it. I scooped one of the chamois shirts and a longsleeve logo tee, which I'll treasure forever.
Aimé Leon Dore - I don't own a single piece from this brand, but they're incredible, and I want to soon. Their Fall/Winter collection is gorgeous, grail-worthy classics in modern, fun takes. The Mets/Yankees caps are incredible, and I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the right Mets cap to cop soon.
BODE - If you've paid attention to menswear in the past two years, you've seen BODE all over the place. If you haven't, please do. It's such a unique brand (Emily Bode is behind it all) that everyone is trying to emulate lately. One day I hope to be able to afford a single piece, lol.
Post-Imperial - I used to work with Niyi, the founder and brains behind Post-Imperial, for a hot minute. We bonded over DBZ and Gui Boratto, and now he's one of the most exciting names in the fashion world. Beautiful textiles using traditional techniques in exciting new silhouettes. Really cool stuff.
